17/06/2008 03:41. LE MANS, France -- Audi survived a collision late in the 24 Hours of Le Mans to win the endurance race for the fifth straight year and give Tom Kristensen a record eighth victory. Kristensen, a Dane, teamed with Rinaldo Capello of Italy and Allan McNish of Britain in the Audi No. 2 that made the best of wet racing Sunday to beat the faster Peugeot cars. "It was a perfect race," Kristensen told France 2 television. "The Audi had no problem at all. It's really unbelievable." Allan McNish and Audi led the Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar race on
Sunday after rain hit Peugeot's hopes of winning the battle of the
diesels. After 17 hours, the number two Audi with the Scot at the wheel was 23 seconds clear of Spain's Marc Gene in the number seven Peugeot. French driver Franck Montagny was two laps adrift in the next Peugeot. Dindo Capello has taken the lead for Audi after chasing down and
passing Jacques Villeneuve's No.7 Peugeot. Capello was circulating up to seven seconds per lap quicker than and took over the lead when all three Peugeots lost time in their scheduled pit stops when they had to be pulled into the garage so the team could attend to apparent overheating problems.
