The hills are alive with the sound of Munich. The folks at BMW have been exceptionally busy lately. No sooner have they unveiled an all-new 7 Series , when in the next breath they announce the mid-cycle update of the current-generation 3 Series. The 2009 BMW 3 Series is the lucky recipient of a subtle re-design both inside and out, plus (and this could be the most exciting news) it now offers the option of a diesel engine that is emissions-legal in all 50 states.

No doubt we all have our own feelings about contemporary BMW styling, but the tweaked front and rear are welcome changes (especially the rear). The front bumper is now different, as are the headlights (theyre also the type that can illuminate around corners, very useful when tackling a curvy canyon road at night). BMW introduced new models of BMW 5 series in India last week. The German luxury car maker is geared towards strengthening its presence in the Indian car market. New models are priced in a range of Rs. 36.5 lakh to Rs. 46.8 lakh. The company has introduced 525i and 530i as two new petrol models while BMW 520d, 530d, and 530D Highline are diesel engine variants in the BMW 5 series. The new models shall be available in a range of refined colours such as the new non-metallic Alpine White, metallic Black Sapphire, Monaco Blue, Titanium Silver and Platinum Grey.

BMW has revised its 3-series and it should be on sale here from September.

There are cosmetic and mechanical tweaks to the compact executive icon and, for the moment, just the saloon and Touring versions are affected.

When stepping inside the 2009 BMW 3-Series, one notices the new chrome inserts, the larger console-integrated storage compartment and the subtly-redesigned armrests. The iDrive multimedia interface has also been upgraded, featuring a 9-inch liquid crystal display with improved resolution and a smaller control.

The navigation system includes a new 80 Gig hard drive, allowing music lovers to store audio files from a CD, an MP3 player or a USB flash drive. On the safety front, active head restraints will now be standard across the line.

An updated version of the BMW 3-Series will go on sale in the UK on 20 September, three and a half years after the current range was introduced.

Both the saloon and estate have been restyled to make them look, in BMW's words, more muscular and sporting. There are practical considerations too, though - the door mirrors, for example, will be larger than before in the interests of improved visibility, while the iDrive system has been revised for "added convenience and improved functionality".
