01/07/2008 09:32. A Northland couple and their young grandson were lucky to escape serious injury when a hawk flew into their car near Whangarei yesterday.

Dargaville police constable Shane Joyce said the trio were travelling about 100kmh about 20km west of Whangarei, when the hawk flew into their windscreen.

The impact shattered the BMW's windscreen, and the male driver veered off the road, down a four-metre bank and into a tree.
