A busy golf weekend in mid-Michigan gave us new champions in the Buick Open and Saginaw District Golf Association tournaments. Both went down to the wire with one stroke separating first and second place.

Grand Blanc, MI (AHN) -- Kenny Perry shot a 6-under 66 to win the Buick Open on Sunday when his two closest competitors couldn't close the deal, probably clinching a berth on the Ryder Cup team as well.

Bogeys at the final two holes by Woody Austin made things easier for Perry but nobody can deny the outstanding form Perry has found for much of 2008 seemingly in contention in every event in recent weeks.

While the golf action didn't disappoint, the fan turnout wasn't as high as officials would have liked. There were still plenty of people at Warwick Hills on Sunday, but veterans and rookies agreed that there could've and should've been many more.

Austin put the pressure on late, with birdies on 12, 13 and 14. Perry had a bogey-eagle-bogey-birdie stretch that dropped him from the lead and pulled him back into a tie with Austin at the 16th.

Many at the Buick Open decided to commemorate the special occasion with a cigar. Smokers Kastle Casa De Cuba sells cigars along the course. Jay Ghoneim says "We saw a peak in our business come spring time, summer time.

Matthew Jones carded a final round of 5-under-par 67 to finish in a tie for 4th place at the Buick Open. Jones was 1-under-par on the front nine, but then turned it on with three birdies and an eagle at the par-5 13th hole.

Woody Austin is notorious for on-course meltdowns that touch the hearts of golf watching Americans. So when he had a one stroke lead with two holes to play in the final round of the Buick Invitational today, all we could do was hope for the best.
