Chrysler's Twinsburg stamping plant down for summer; union expects ...
04/07/2008 08:31. Chrysler LLC's stamping plant in Twinsburg will be down most of July and August, and job cuts could be coming this fall, a union leader said Wednesday.

Doug Rice, president of United Auto Workers Local 122 in Twinsburg, said most of the assembly plants that use its parts are on extended shutdowns this summer in response to sluggish sales.

In June, Chrysler's sales were down 36 percent.

"We're going to be down to one shift through August, and it's going to be a really light shift," Rice said.

Most auto plants close for the first two weeks of July for vacations and model changeovers. With $4-per-gallon gasoline prices pushing down sales of pickups and sport utility vehicles, Chrysler has extended those shutdowns at several plants so dealers can sell off excess inventory.
