'90s Ford Ranger offers energy independence as manufacturers ...
04/07/2008 14:27. Paul Moore is feeling a lot more independent this Fourth of July, and it's not just patriotism.

With most metro-Phoenix drivers paying $4.09 or more per gallon of gas to drive out and watch fireworks, the Paradise Valley resident knows driving anywhere will cost him only pennies.

That's because in March the software business developer paid $15,000 for his 1998 Ford Electric Ranger, one of the few remaining electric vehicles left in the country.
The Arizona Center parking garage at APS headquarters in downtown Phoenix still has plug-in terminals for electric cars, a remnant of the late 1990s experiments with vehicles in California and Arizona.

The plugs highlight the infrastructure hurdle any alternative-transportation technology will contend with.
