In the wake of being traded from Los Angeles to Long Island earlier this season, Spencer Ford knew exactly what he needed to do.
He was well aware of who the Lizards' resident boss was and is: two-time MLL defenseman of the year Nicky Polanco. Ford also understood that to achieve what he was sent to Long Island to accomplish - to be its offensive quarterback - he and Polanco would need to share leadership responsibilities from their respective ends of the field.
So not long after the Lizards swung a draft-day deal to acquire him, Ford, who set a league single-season assists record with the Riptide a year ago, approached Polanco, widely regarded as one of the loudest players in the league and the heart of the team.
