KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -The Kansas City Royals promoted J.J. Picollo to assistant general manager of scouting and player development on Thursday.

In his new role, he will be the final authority on the team's free agent scouting.

Picollo followed Royals GM Dayton Moore to the Royals from the Atlanta Braves in 2006 as the director of player development. He will continue in that capacity with his new title.
