Honda, concerned about a glut of Odyssey minivans and brand-new 2009 Pilots sitting on dealer lots, has elected to trim production of the larger vehicles in favor of increasing production of the new 2009 Civic . The drop will equate to about 10,000 units combined at the Lincoln, Alabama plant, and the resulting plant downtime will be used for employee training and maintenance. What, no layoffs? Come on, throw GM a bone. At least send someone home early with half-pay.

July 21 (Bloomberg) -- Honda Motor Co., the only large automaker to gain U.S. sales this year, will boost North American output of its Civic small car on increased demand and build fewer Odyssey minivans and Pilot sport utility-vehicles.

Light-truck production at Honda's Lincoln, Alabama, plant will be pared by 10,000 units from August through October, or about 3.3 percent of annual capacity, spokesman David Iida said today. He didn't give a figure for the Civic increase and said the truck cuts won't affect the 4,500-person Alabama workforce.

``There will be no layoffs. We're just adjusting production given market conditions,'' Iida said in an interview. ``We want to manage our stock of vehicles, and not let it get too high.''

Honda has got to be happy that it has a hot selling compact car to take some of the pain out of the slowing minivan and SUV markets. Hurt by the sky-high price of gasoline, both the Odyssey and Pilot , both recently redesigned, are sitting on dealers lots longer than Honda would like.
