June's sales figures were coyote ugly, and today industry observers and executives are left to ponder what lies ahead for what is shaping up to be the worst year for auto sales in recent memory.

By now the stats are familiar: sales fell 18.3 percent for the month, and Honda was the only true winner, with General Motors perhaps claiming a hollow victory after its sales didn't slip as much as everyone had predicted.

But tunneling a bit deeper into the data reveals some interesting storylines that will shape the second half of the year.
