Honda Motor Co. Ltd. is blaming "profound" uncertainties in the auto market behind
a decline in sales last month, its first in four months. Torrance, Calif.-based American Honda Motor Co. posted total July sales of 138,744 vehicles, down 2 percent from 141,049 in July 2007. That accounts for a marginal decline in its Honda division, sales for which fell to 125,916 vehicles from 126,668 last year, coupled with an 11 percent sales decline for its luxury Acura division. Acura sales fell to 12,828 last month, versus 14,381 a year ago. Reflecting a continued shift toward more fuel-efficient vehicles, the automaker's Honda and Acura-divison cars saw a 14 percent gain in sales, offset by a 23 percent drop in pickup, minivan and sport-utility vehicle sales. American Honda Motor Co. said Friday its July U.S. sales declined
as a rise in car volumes was unable to outpace the Japanese
automaker's dramatic decline in truck sales. Honda Motor Co.'s U.S. arm said combined sales at its Honda and Acura divisions in July fell 1.6 percent to 138,744 units from 141,049 in July last year. Sales of trucks tumbled 22 percent to 47,801 compared with 61,245 a year earlier, the company reported. Car sales, meanwhile, increased 14 percent to 90,943 from 79,804.
