JOHN'S, N.L. - A low-riding luxury sedan weighing more than two tonnes would probably not be your first pick for a high-speed performance rally over some of Newfoundland's most twisty, bumpy, potholed and nasty roads. For the people at Lexus Canada, it was at once the first, best and only choice.

Last year, organizers of the international Targa road race in southern Newfoundland added a new Hybrid division to the existing Classic and Modern categories. As leaders in hybrid powertrain technology, Lexus and parent company Toyota saw a chance to show that hybrids are not only for saving gas and slashing emissions. They can go, too, and there was no better venue than the tough Targa tarmac rally to prove it.
