The McRae Gathering - a huge tribute by Subaru owners to the late World Rally Champion Colin McRae - ended this weekend with two new world records.

Hundreds of motor racing fans will head to Banbury today to celebrate the life of rally driver Colin McRae by setting off on a 300-mile rally.

A convoy of Subarus will leave McRae's home town of Lanark to travel to the base of the Subaru World Rally Team, based in Oxfordshire.

Family friend Ben Porcelli, six, and Graeme Duncan, 37, were also killed in the crash near to McRae's home.

McRae's father Jimmy is expected to lead the "McRae Gathering" convoy in one of Colin's original cars.

It will travel south and is expected to stretch for more than 10 miles, involving 700 cars, by the time it reaches Birmingham.

The 2008 McRae Gathering aims to break two world records and raise cash for charities associated with the star, who died in a helicopter crash near his Lanark home almost a year ago.

On Saturday, Subaru owners from across the UK will gather at Lanark Auction Market at the start of a marathon pilgrimage to Banbury and Warwick, bases for the Prodrive team which ran Colins WRC cars.

The organisers expected more than 300 cars to leave Lanark on Saturday morning, with others joining the convoy as it heads south. Abington Services is one of a handful of official convoy joining points, with cars expected there at 10.20am.
