Subaru plant embraces the three Rs
05/09/2008 18:37. LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Imagine being told that, by 2010, your household must send absolutely nothing to the landfill. To accomplish such a feat requires using the modern interpretation of the three Rs. Reducing the incoming flow cuts the outgoing stream. The rest of what was once dumped at the curb and tipped into a landfill pit must be reused or recycled. Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. (SIA), a sprawling plant that builds Legacys, Outbacks, Tribecas and Toyota Camrys, has been zero-landfill since 2004 -- 99.8% of what was once garbage is now either reused or recycled (the remaining 0.2% is the noxious stuff that's shipped to a plant in Ohio where it is destroyed in an environmentally safe manner).
