TWO-TIME drivers world champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso bounced back to the top of the formula one timing screens with the fastest time for Renault in the second free practice for today's Belgian Grand Prix.

On a rain and interruptions-hit afternoon in the Ardennes, the 2005 and 2006 champion was fastest ahead of the morning pacesetter Brazilian Felipe Massa of Ferrari.

It was a stunning performance by the 27-year-old Spaniard as he rolled back the years.

Massa had to settle for second, but was ahead of his championship rivals Finn Heikki Kovalainen and Briton Lewis Hamilton, who were third and fourth for McLaren Mercedes. Massa's Ferrari teammate and defending drivers world champion, Finn Kimi Raikkonen, winner of the past three Belgian Grands Prix, was fifth.

Suzuki have re-signed Loris Capirossi and Chris Vermeulen to the Japanese outfit's MotoGP roster for next season.

Veteran Capirossi joined Suzuki from Ducati for this season and, having recently set a record for grand prix starts, finished on the podium at Brno.

The future of Vermeulen (pictured) had remained unclear, with interest from World Superbikes and rival squad Honda Gresini.

He is sixth in the World Championship after podiums in Germany and America and performed with some success in 2007, winning at a rain-lashed Le Mans.

"We are of course pleased to have finalised the rider agreements for 2009 and to move forward with Loris and Chris," said team manager Paul Denning.

Loris Capirossi and Chris Vermeulen will continue to race for the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team after signing new deals for the 2009 season.

Vermeulen, 26, who is sixth in the drivers' standings with five races to go, was given his first chance to race in MotoGP by the team in 2007.

Veteran Capirossi also joined the team in 2007 after leaving Ducati.

The new deal for the 35-year-old Italian means he could notch up a 300th Grand Prix start next season.

Australian Vermeulen is in his third season with the Japanese manufacturer and currently sits sixth in the championship standings after securing two podium finishes.

Veteran Capirossi joined the team at the end of 2007 while Vermeulen had been at Suzuki since the start of the 2006 season.
