Toyota said it has developed the world’s first rear-window airbag to improve protection for back-seat passengers in the event of a rear-end collision.

The airbag is designed to eject from the roof lining above the rear window and spread across the back window to protect the heads of rear-seat passengers, the company said. It’s designed to work with the headrest to help reduce the severity of impacts to the head.

Look around from the driver's seat of your car.  If it's a recent model, you have airbags in front of you, airbags beside you, airbags above your head...in an accident, your car can almost surround with pillows of air.  Almost.  Not too protected from the back, are you?  Rear seat passengers seem particularly exposed in collisions.  This is a concern, considering that accident statistics show that, "While deaths from rear-end crashes are relatively low, rear crashes are one of the most common causes for neck injuries commonly known as whiplash," according to Edmunds.com

Toyota has announced that its developed the worlds first rear-window airbag, and will use it on future models.

Its been designed to protect back seat passenger in a rear-end collision. The new type of airbag deploys from the roof lining above the rear window and forms a protective barrier between the headrests in a crash.

It should help protect occupants from injuries like whiplash in the event of a rear-end smash.

The automaker is also trimming the number of salaried workers, and it seeks volunteers. If enough don’t come forth, the company will turn to involuntary cuts, a source says.

In a statement, he said, “The reduction is part of the continuing streamlining of our North American operations.”

The reduction in GM's contract staffing is part of a bigger effort to reduce the automaker’s overall costs, sources familiar with the initiative told Automotive News . The number of contract workers who will be dismissed is unclear, but it could be several hundred, one source said.

DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. says it has notified several employment agencies that it intends to cut contract jobs as it continues to shrink its work force to match lower U. S. sales.

GM spokesman Dan Flores wouldn't say how many contract workers would be cut. He says the cuts began in March and will be made across GM's U. S. facilities.

The cuts come as part of GM's plan to reduce its U. S. white-collar costs by more than 20 per cent.

The company had about 32,000 salaried workers in the U. S. at the end of last year.

GM has been cutting vehicle production as its sales have slumped.

At first glance we weren't really sure what this new airbag does that rear headrests don't already do. A contract worker at GM for RCO Engineering said a large number of workers were laid off about three months ago. An RCO Engineering employee confirmed that the company has had layoffs, but didn't have a figure.
