Mercedes AMG has launched a new cannon for the road: the SL 65 AMG Black Series. The immense power and torque of the engine – 670HP, 1000Nm – is matched by the two-seater’s broad, muscular body, 14cm wider than the standard SL, while the expansive mudguards, retractable rear spoiler and rear apron with diffuser fins all hint strongly at its motorsport origins (DTM C-Class or 1997 CLK-GTR, perhaps?).

The generous cooling apertures in the front apron and bonnet are a clear indication that something special is lurking in the engine bay. There are powerful cars and really powerful cars. When a machine has over 600 horsepower, its in a pretty exclusive club. Just about to be inducted into the Garage of Fame is the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series . Thats a whole lot of title, but its a whole lot of car.

AMG is M-Bs performance division and its products sell generally well in the USA and particularly well in southern California. When a Benz gets the AMG treatment, its like being bitten by a radioactive spider or exposed to gamma rays -- it acquires super powers.

You probably think the standard Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG is pretty quick. Well, it is, but not by comparison with the new Black Series version.

The Black Series has considerably more power than the regular SL 65 AMG (up from 612bhp to 670bhp, making this the most powerful production AMG car ever) and it's also 250kg lighter, thanks largely to the use of carbonfibre composites in the bodywork. The result is a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 199mph. With Mercedes ending its road car performance development agreement with McLaren, AMG has gone into overdrive with research and development.

The Affalterbach team, who show a disconcerting penchant for regarding power and torque more important than traction, happened on the idea that the new SL 63 AMG was a perennial underachiever.

And really, you cant help but see their point with only 387kW hardly enough in this ecological day and age.

Now the SL65, which has a 6-litre, bi-turbo V12, has been given the Black Series silly name, we know treatment. The Black Series retains a standard SL65 transmission mangling 1 000Nm torque peak.

The turbochargers have been upgraded not only to increase power but also to maximize intercooling and quicken throttle response. The exhaust system has also been revised to optimize exhaust flow and give this AMG a totally unique sound.

The fearsome V12 is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode (including four dynamic settings).

With all that power, the SL65 AMG Black Series accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in only 11 seconds. Top speed is limited at 320 km/h.

Improving handling and stability is an advanced suspension with compression and rebound adjustments. The driver can also fine-tune the car's ride height, wheel alignment and camber angle.
