Bigger isn't necessary better these days, but the two terms are riding right along side each other under the skin of the new 2009 Audi A4 sedan and wagon.

Lately, Audi has done a good job giving its German-based rivals, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, a run for their Euro. The products are well engineered, attractive and a blast to drive. Audi vehicles also rank high in terms of value, which also attracts plenty of attention.

At first blush, the shape of the new A4 appears to closely copy that of the 2008 model. You'll find the same open-mouth egg-crate grille that gives the car its road-hugging hunkered-down look. But the new car is nearly five inches longer, two inches wider and the distance between the front and rear wheels has been extended by 6.5 inches. First right hand drive deliveries are due here in the UK from late October 2008.

The UK unit has also added an RS 6 saloon to its range to complement the existing Avant (wagon) version - deliveries begin in November.

New engine range highlights include a 290PS supercharged petrol three-litre TFSI unit, which effectively replaces both the 3.2 FSI V6 and the 4.2 V8, and a new 136PS two-litre TDI diesel  with common rail fuel_injection  with piezo injectors. As with the new Volkswagen  Golf range, This replaces the 140PS pump jet (PD) injection engine and a 170PS version will be available later in 2008. All Audi's TDI engines now have common rail fuel injection systems.

Ingolstadt, Germany - Audi has announced the all-new A6, with new engines and technologies that will cut fuel consumption by about 15 per cent across the model range, along with improved suspension and new high-tech assistance system. Long before it hits U.S. shores, the 2009 Audi A6 is being shown off at this month's Moscow auto show--and later this fall at the Paris auto show .

Audi released photos and details of the updated A6 this week, describing its more efficient engines, improved suspension tuning and upgraded Multi-Media Interface (MMI) controller.

The obvious changes come up front, where Audi's single-frame grille is flanked by a reshaped bumper that puckers more like that on the 2009 Audi A4 . The air vents and fog lights have been reshaped, and new xenon LED daytime running lights are faired into the headlamp shape. Dynamic and adaptive lighting is an option on the new A6; the taillamps have been restyled, as well.

Audi's revealed details and photos of the 2009 RS 6 supersedan--but don't get so antsy if you're in the U.S.

Audi hasn't confirmed any plans to sell the new RS 6 in America, but it has released all the details on it prior to a public appearance at the Moscow auto show , and then the more widely attended Paris auto show this fall.

The new RS 6 has had the equivalent of a heart transplant, ditching the V-8s of lesser A6 derivatives for a 5.0-liter V-10 with twin turbocharged and quattro all-wheel drive. Audi says it draws 580 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque from the engine, which it teams  with a six-speed automatic transmission with quicker shift reflexes. Smarter both aesthetically and technically, the new Audi A6 range makes its international debut this week, underpinning enhancements to visual appeal, refinement, convenience electronics and equipment with improvements in fuel economy and emissions control averaging 12 per cent courtesy of new or updated engines. Priced from £24,800 OTR for the new economy-targeting 2.0 TDIe model, delivering in excess of 53mpg with 139g/km of CO2, the range is available to order now and will reach its first UK customers in October.

Audi invited us to Elkhart Lake, Wis., this past weekend to check out the American Le Mans series at Road America on Saturday. (Ingolstadt, Germany’s, two R10 racecars ended up clinching a one-two finish, incidentally.) Oh, there was also a new 2009 A4 on hand to drive around local roads all day — a European version, to be sure, but aside from a few cosmetic changes, it’s mechanically identical to the one hitting U.S. showrooms this fall. 

Drive we did. A full review is in the works, but at first blush the redesigned A4 is worth a look in a segment jam-packed with excellent cars. It isn’t as dynamic at the limits as a BMW 3 Series or an Infiniti G35, but for most people it certainly ought to be playful enough — and as a daily driver it stands out above... // Cars.com

The updated Audi A6 range is available to order starting this week and will arrive in UK dealerships in October.

The new A6 is recognisably different from the current one thanks to a series of styling changes both inside and out, but the big news is Audi's thorough revamp of the engine line-up.

For example, the 3.2 FSI V6 and 4.2 V8 petrol engines have both gone, to be replaced by a supercharged three-litre TFSI. This has close to the power of the 4.2, with a maximum of 286bhp giving 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph, but it also uses less fuel on the combined economy cycle than the old 3.2 did, with an official figure of 30mpg.
