What is it? The redesigned Audi A4 upscale sedan grows in size, measuring almost 5 inches longer and over 2 inches wider than the previous version, yet it will weigh 10 percent less due in part to using lighter steel. It is essentially a sedan version of the A5 that has just been introduced. The premium small sedan category is a hot one. BMW has been the benchmark in this segment ever since the 3-Series grew out of the wonderful 1800 and 2002 models of the 60s and 70s. While the US manufacturers cant seem to make a dime on small cars, they dont make anything that can justify the price. The Germans, on the other hand, know this market intimately, and Audi is keeping up admirably.

The 2009 Audi A4 sedan and Avant will be hitting lots later this year, and before dealers can begin taking orders in September, they've got to let people know what it'll cost to get behind the wheel of the thoroughly revised entry-level Audi.

Audi announced pricing today for redesigned versions of its A4 sedan and wagon. The 2009 A4 sedan will start at $32,700, while the Avant wagon lists for $34,500, not including an $825 destination charge. That's nearly $3,000 more than the outgoing 2008 sedan's base price and about $1,500 more than the outgoing wagon's. The cars arrive at Audi dealerships later this summer.
