More power, lower emissions and improved economy for Fiat's family.

Fiat has just extended its Bravo mid-size hatchback range with the introduction of a new 165bhp 2.0 MultiJet diesel engine which features a close-coupled diesel particulate filter (DPF) and is type-approved to Euro 5 standards, ahead of the 2009 dead.

When Fiat launched their new Bravo to the Irish market just over 12 months ago Geoff Smyth, their Irish CEO at the time, said they were willing to drop the price of the new car to try and gain a foothold.

As mentioned in our launch report the Bravo Eco is Fiat's attempt to do what other manufacturers - most notably the Volkswagen Group - have done in the past, namely to offer a tax-busting version of an existing car.

Fiat has come up with a 'fun-to-drive' index. What they reckon is, regardless of how fast a car can sprint from 0 to 62mph, or manage flat-out on a motorway, 'fun' comes down - largely - to the first few seconds of acceleration.

The 1.9-litre MultiJet turbo diesel engine which has done such excellent work in a great many Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Vauxhall, Saab and Cadillac products is gradually being replaced by a more modern unit with the same name but a lower capacity.
