Mercedes-Benz is to underline its claim to build the world's most desirable coupés at the 2008 Paris Motor Show at the beginning of October with the reveal of its ConceptFASCINATION design study.

September 12, 2008 The latest design study from Mercedes-Benz is Concept FASCINATION - and it looks pretty swish. Under its skin, the highly-sculpted hatchback coup is based on E-Class technology with drive provided by a new four-cylinder BlueTEC diesel engine which develops 150 kW/ 204 hp from a displacement of 2.2 liters. It's mostly about the looks though. Designed to pull on the heartstrings of coup lovers with a healthy dose of practical usability thrown in, the Concept makes extensive use of luxurious hand-crafted materials on the inside including a load compartment made of wood with brushed aluminum protective rails and built-in refrigerator and humidor. Reports that Mercedes-Benz might be considering renaming the CLK to reflect its E-Class design cues have taken firm hold of the automotive world. Now Mercedes has officially confirmed the E-Class coupe will be returning, and as a preview, will be showing the Fascination Concept at next months Paris Motor Show.

The concept, which looks a great deal like a CLK shooting brake style two-door wagon, is actually expected to be built on proper E-Class underpinnings as opposed to the modified C-Class platform of the CLK. The press release that accompanies it confirms Mercedes is working on a future E-Class Coupe, previewed by this concept.

Fresh on the heels of the reveal of the C250 BlueEFFICIENCY , Mercedes gives us a peek at the future of the E-Class with the ConceptFASCINATION. As the oddly capitalized name indicates, we are only looking at a concept. However, with the still handsome, but slighty dated looking, E-Class due for a refresh, we can expect at least the broad strokes of the concept to translate to production.

Under the hood, the ConceptFASCINATION is powered by the same new 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine that will be introduced on the C250 BlueEFFICIENCY. Is the Mercedes-Benz ConceptFASCINATION, set to debut at the Paris Motor Show , a concept version of a car we're not going to get? Let's run down the list: German? Check. Shooting brake? Check. Diesel-powered? Check? Stupid name ? Check. Yes, this fanciful look at a two-door wagon is but a wild way of previewing the lines of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class and teasing hatch fans everywhere, though we hope we're wrong. Powered by the same small diesel mill found in the Mercedes C250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime , the concept features a humidor, refrigerated compartment and an interior inspired by equestrianism. Mercedes-Benz engineers have been experimenting with the idea of a new coupé, and the result is a concept car known as the CoupeFASCINATION which will be revealed to the public at next month's Paris Show.

The CoupeFASCINATION is a cross between a regular coupé and an estate car, and the emphasis is very much on luxury. That can be seen even in the luggage compartment, which has a wood floor with brushed aluminium protective rails. Mercedes has given us a glimpse into its future and it looks fascinating. Merc took the wraps of its new Fascination concept for the first time today, and its set to be the blueprint for the next-generation of E-class.

The concept is not due to make it as far as production but does give off strong hints as to what the new E-class range will look like. More specifically it is the best indicator yet as to what the new coupe will look like when it replaces the current CLK.

Mercedes-Benz is to show its ConceptFascination (yes, one word) at the Paris Motor Show, which not only previews the next E-Class but also the CLK.

Conceived at the Mercedes design studio in Sindelfingen, Germany,the concept reveals a radical new styling trend for the German carmaker.

The Fascination prototype is a sporty two-door wagon, or a shooting brake concept.

Although Mercedes says it has no plans for a production version of the four-seat Fascination, rumour has it that it could be produced as an extension of the CLK line creating yet another niche motoring segment.

The concepts nose design features dual trapezoidal headlights with a three-slat grille that will appear almost unchanged on the CLK as well as the E-class.
