The Mercedes -Benz McLaren SLR has already begun to ride off into the sunset , but before it goes the way of the Pontiac Aztec, the German automaker has decided to grace us with one more limited edition of the less-than-successful supercar. Dubbed the 722 S, the latest SLR is essentially a722 Coupe sans roof.

Because of the 722 S’ link to the 722 Coupe, the uber drop top uses a supercharged 5.5L V8, good for 650 horsepower. That stable of ponies is good for a top end in excess of 220 mph, which makes the 772 S one of the fastest convertibles ever built.

Daimler has dropped the details on a new version of their top of the-top of the line sports car, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S. With a name that long you have to expect some intense upgrades, and the pointy-star brand comes through with a 650 HP version of the supercharged 5.5 liter V8 (same as the non-S 722 ), delivering an eye watering 627 lb-ft of torque (also the same). All that power is channeled through a five speed automatic with selectable shifting characteristics. All that adds up to a zero to 62 MPH time of 3.7 seconds, with 124 MPH comes in 10.6 seconds and maximum velocity is 208 MPH — all in a car you can fold the soft top down in. Essentially yes. The S is an  SLR roadster with all the 722's special tweaks.

So we start with a carbonfibre SLR, but add a '722 S' etched wind deflector and an aluminium-reinforced folding fabric roof with carbon-look weave – though said roof still needs to be manually unlatched.

The supercharged 5.5-litre V8 is then tweaked, lifting power from 617 to 641bhp, while torque climbs from 575 to 605lb ft. That means the 0-62mph sprint... // CAR Magazine
