BRENTWOOD, England — Ford's European Focus takes on a more aggressive air in a new RS edition that exudes sex and power — nearly 300 horses, to be specific.

The hot hatch is being unveiled July 22 at the London auto show. Ford released the first official images and details on Monday.

The Focus RS goes on sale in the U.K. and other European markets in early 2009. OK, I have to admit, when I slipped behind the wheel of the Vista Blue '09 Ford Focus coupe press car last week, I wasn't exactly expecting it to knock my socks off. I mean, two of the last three rides I had the opportunity to test drive were supercharged, with one being a GT500 and the other a supercharged Harley-Davidson F150 hauler. Throw in the luxury-laden Lincoln MKZ, and you can see why I was a bit unenthusiastic about firing up the 2.0L, DOHC, four-cylinder powerplant.

Boy, was I wrong. After having the car for a week, I wish I had one for my daily commuter. Not only was the car fun to drive, but its price tag was cheap, and it saved me enough on gas that I could afford to take the wife to a movie.

Turns out the Electric Green Ford Focus RS we saw last week is more than just a show car. Ford has admitted the little green hulk is essentially the finished vehicle, minus some fine tuning. Now, depending on which side of the fencepost you sit on, an inline-five with 275 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed in a car the size of a Focus RS , along with all kinds of fancy suspension trickery, is either a magical, amazing thing OR the obnoxious boy-racer bodywork rubs you the wrong way and totally ruins whatever genius lies underneath. Ford Kuga, Ford Kuga, sounds familiar ... Got it! Sounds a bit like Ford Cougar. Phonetically identical, in fact. That's not very imaginative; they couldn't think of a new name for their new car, so they just took an old name, of a car they used to make, and spelled it differently. What next? The Kapree? The Ford Korteena? I preferred it in the olden days when Ford just named their cars after bad magazines for chaps: Escort, Fiesta a car that still exists, come to think of it so why couldn't they just carry on? Looks like the earlier leak was the real deal. Ford has officially taken the wraps off the latest version of its range-topping Focus RS, one of Ford of Europe's most famous hot hatches. The latest RS will make its world debut at the London Motor Show in a few weeks and will go on sale in Europe at the beginning of 2009. Its hard to know where to start when describing the all-new 155mph sub £25k Ford Focus RS, for although it may not go on sale until the spring of 2009 this wont prevent it from stealing most of the headlines at this months London Motorshow.

The main technical points are as follows: sub £25k price, 295bhp, 302lb ft of torque, front-wheel drive with a Quaife limited slip diff. Zero to 60mph will take less than six seconds, the top speed will be limited to 155mph and zero to 100mph will take something between 12-13sec.

Of all the cars being displayed at the British International Motor Show later this month, few are likely to generate quite as much interest as the second-generation Focus RS.

The RS name is Ford's way of saying that it means business. In the past it has applied the tag to 21 models, from the Escort RS1600 of 1970 to the original Focus RS of 2002.

The 22nd version uses the same Volvo-supplied 2.5-litre turbo petrol engine as the current Focus ST , but in this case it has been modified to produce 296bhp, or nearly half as much again as the first Focus RS and about 70bhp more than the ST. Official performance figures have not yet been released, but Ford is expecting to be able to quote a 0-62mph time of under six seconds.
