01/12/2008 15:16. It was one of those beautiful days that makes you glad to live in Pennsylvania instead of a place such as Tampa or Phoenix, where you always have to wear sunglasses and worry about putting on suntan lotion before playing a round of golf in mid-December.

Golf was the furthest thing from my mind as I loaded my family's skis and boots in the back of my 1984 Subaru station wagon for a day at Elk Mountain. It had snowed the night before, so we were expecting good conditions on the slopes.

The roads, however, were another story. We were barely out of our driveway when it became obvious that crews hadn't done a great job clearing them. Within a mile, that became even more obvious as the Subaru hit a patch of crud in the middle of a sharp curve and started sliding.
