Scotsman Gordon Nichol meanwhile had been ahead of Gamble with one stage to go, but suffered problems, something that also allowed Ross Forde and Nick Rowland to leapfrog him to finish second and third.

"We'd built up that lead, and if we had won, the title fight would have gone to the Tempest, but before the last stage the clutch went to the floor," said a disappointed Nichol, who ended up fourth. "In the stage I went for third gear and got nothing, from there we had a mile uphill and the time just slipped away."
