06/11/2008 09:22. When Toyota introduced the latest Highlander, the four-cylinder model was dropped as the SUV grew. But now, tough economic times dictate a change in game plan, and come January 2009 the four-cylinder Highlander will make its return. With Highlander sales in October down 29.2% compared to October 2007, a more efficient and cheaper Highlander might be just the thing to move the model toward positive sales territory.

Fuel economy is a significant improvement. Toyota says the four-cylinder Highlander will get 20 city/27 highway mpg, compared to the Highlander V-6's 18 city/24 highway mpg and the Highlander Hybrid's 27 city/25 highway mpg.

As you'd expect for a vehicle weighing 4050 pounds, the four-cylinder Highlander isn't quick. Toyota estimates 0 to 60 mph in 9.7 sec and says it can tow... // MotorTrend Magazine
