Pictures of the all-new petrol-electric Toyota Prius show the hybrid will look sleeker and sportier than its predecessors when it goes on sale in 2009.

The new Prius, which isn’t due to debut until January’s Detroit motor show, features an evolutionary body shape but with changes to styling and dimensions.

The windscreen, for example, is more steeply raked and the roofline and glasshouse are significantly more coupe-like than the current-generation model. The new Prius is rumoured to be about 25mm wider but about 30mm shorter than the current model.

With the Honda Insight and Chevrolet Volt arriving in the not too distant future, the third-generation 2010 Toyota Prius is charged with protecting its domination in the hybrid/green vehicle segment. Toyota has retained the aerodynamically efficient body shape, but the 2010 Prius -- at least, from the front end -- sports a different appeal from the 2009 model.

Chicago (IL) - Recently published photos of the third-generation 2010 Toyota Prius have been confirmed by Toyota to be authentic. However, Toyota declined to provide additional information about the new hybrid – information that is likely to become available not until the unveiling of the car at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Judging by what we can see now, the 2009 Prius should be about the same size as the current model, though previous shots published on the Indicated that the car could be both a little wider and shorter. The overall styling appears to be more refined and aligned with a much more fluid design theme that evolves from flat face of current Toyota models, such as the 2009 Corolla and Camry. The 2010 Toyota Prius is scheduled to be revealed at the 2008 LA Auto Show, but there's just one small problem. We've already seen it!

Images of the new Prius leaked all over the web earlier this week and, on Thursday, Toyota confirmed that the leaked images were--in fact--authentic.

Taking a look at the next-gen Prius, we can see that the nose gets a fairly aggressive update. I'm not a fan of the new Japanese trend of these boomerang headlamps, but apparently we'll be seeing a lot more of it in the coming years. 2010 Prius gossip was silenced today when Toyota's Open Road Blog editor Jon F. Thompson confirmed that the photos revealed here yesterday, and here again today, are the real thing.

"We thought we'd take a moment to confirm that the car shown in these unauthorized photos - at least the ones we've seen so far - is indeed the new Prius," stated Thompson. "Sorry, we're not able to provide details," he added. "Those will be forthcoming when the car is formally introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January."

Toyota has been coy about the appearance and features of its upcoming 2010 Prius hybrid vehicle, but somehow these pics leaked out. The photos show a Prius that's about the same shape as its predecessor, with wedgier-looking headlights and some nice-looking fog lamps that reside in what looks like a jet engine intake. There was no further word about its plug-in capabilities or that solar battery-charging roof .

What we can tell you, however, is this: This new Prius will retain all of the virtues of the model that precedes it. Its about the same size as its forebear, but with more interior room and better fuel economy. But you expected nothing less, right?

This is it, the 2010 Toyota Prius , the next generation of hybrid vehicle. Apologies for the low-quality picture, but these shots seem to have been taken from some video footage. The images first appeared on PriusChat.com , and once the metaphorical genie was out of the bottle, Toyota stepped in and confirmed on its Open Road blog that this is what the new Prius will look like. The Prius will be about the same size as the current model (we suspect about and inch wider and and inch shorter based on previous spy shots,) and that the fuel economy will be better (duh.)
