TOYOTA has given the first glimpse of its all-new Avensis model, which is to be built in Britain and will go on sale here from the beginning of next year.

It will be the third generation of the family model to emerge from the factory at Burnaston in Derbyshire, which is one of three successful UK satellite plants for Japanese giants, together with Honda at Swindon and Nissan at Sunderland.

Toyota has chosen to unveil the Avensis at the Paris Motor Show next month.

The newcomer arrives at a difficult time for those hoping to sell in the large medium sector, which Nissan pulled out of completely when sales of its Primera model nose-dived and the company predicted a shift towards mid-range SUVs such as the Qashqai.

The third-generation Toyota Avensis will make its world debut at the Paris Show on October 2.

Detailed information about the new Avensis is sparse at this stage, but Toyota is promising a range of engines which are more powerful than the ones in the current car, while using less fuel and emitting lower levels of CO2.

Toyota has released a sneak preview of the new Avensis.

The rear shot shows how the new saloon will take on a Lexus-inspired design, with squared-off rear lights and a high, more clearly defined boot shape.

Sources say that Toyota has improved the cars interior quality and design, too, with the cabin also getting more than a touch of Lexus.

Due to go on sale in 2009, the new Toyota Avensis will continue to be built at the companys Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, where the current model is made.
