This is the new Volkswagen Golf GTI, although VW is calling it a concept when its unveiled at the Paris Motor Show later this week.

The sixth-generation version of the most famous hot hatch ever sold is likely to look similar in its final production form, Which? believes.

You know the automotive world has turned upside down when Volkswagen, the company credited with inventing the original minivan, attaches its logo to a North American-designed-and-built people mover.

The resulting Chrysler-made Volkswagen Routan is set to give the German automaker its first such conveyance since its slow-selling EuroVan departed following the 2003 model year.

For a while, it appeared that VW would recreate a little retro-magic of its own when it displayed a concept van a few years back with styling that emulated its successful Beetle-base effort from the early 1950s. The company instead chose to outsource the project. Chrysler, the most successful minivan builder ever since it revived the category 25 years ago, was a logical and willing partner.

Volkswagen may officially describe it as a concept, but this is basically the production-ready version of the new Golf GTi. Due in showrooms in Summer 2009, the new model uses a development of the current GTI's 2.0-litre T-FSI engine, but now producing 210bhp while also returning better fuel economy and lower emissions. The sporty GTI is hardly famous as being the world's greenest Golf -- that title goes to the upcoming 74mpg Bluemotion Golf Concept . Today, however, VW's new sixth generation GTI has taken a baby step towards eco heaven by cutting its carbon emissions.

While the Bluemotion Golf Concept hopes to achieve incredibly low emissions of 99g/km CO2, the GTI is aiming to belch a rather dirtier 178g/km and eek out just 37.6mpg. Still, at least... // SmartPlanet.com

The CC is a remarkable bit of styling from the German automaker; it could truly be called a powerful design statement (which is what the maker was after, of course). The newest VeeDub is sleek, aerodynamic and made up of equal parts executive class and Euro-sport feel.

While Volkswagen’s senior planners see the CC competing primarily with brands like the Accord and Altima coupes, I can see this new four-passenger halo reaching across a lot of aisles when consumers start seeing them at the dealerships next month.

With its sweeping lines and steeply raked windshield, narrowing side glass and aggressive stance, the CC is handsome enough (and well enough equipped) to be compared to any similar-class high end marques from Europe or Japan.

Though we were intrigued by news of a sixth-generation Golf, as enthusiasts and devotees of the current GTI we wondered when the next hot hatch would arrive. It turns out the 2008 Paris motor show will grant us our first official look at the 2009 Volkswagen GTI - though VW managed to slip some information out in advance.

Like the next Golf/Rabbit itself, the new GTI is what could be deemed a mild evolution. Though the platform has been considerably reworked, much of it still harkens back to the fifth-generation car - which, we'd argue, isn't necessarily a bad thing. We found that car's chassis to be a verifiable gem among small cars, and if Volkswagen can save money by carrying over some components, so be it.

Volkswagen has unveiled the latest incarnation of the Golf in concept form ahead of its public debut at the Paris Motor Show, which is due to take place from October 4th to 19th.

The new vehicle features and electronic limited slip differential which is linked to an electronic stabilisation programme system, allowing it to maximise traction and improve responsiveness, the manufacturer states.

A 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI engine powers the GTI concept.

32 years after the original model was introduced, it's almost unthinkable that there could not be a GTI version of the sixth-generation Volkswagen Golf .

Well, don't worry, because there will be. It will go on sale in the UK next summer, and Volkswagen is giving a preview of what it will almost certainly be like at the forthcoming Paris Show.

It's not radically different from the other models in the new Golf range, but it does have a couple of GTI firsts - Adaptive Chassis Control, which gives a choice of Comfort, Normal and Sport settings for the dampers, and an electronic limited slip differential which is... // CARkeys

This combination of design elements will become a consistent feature of all future GTI models, such as the Polo. "I'm not saying there will be a Scirocco GTI," explained Lichte, "but if there is, it would have the same graphic treatment."

The visual emphasis on the base of the front bumper changes the stance of the sixth-generation GTI, claims Lichte. To reinforce this, the foglamps have been repositioned at the extremes of the lower grille. "On the old car the fogs were about 150mm in from the headlamps; now they're outboard," he said.

Volkswagen believes that the Mk5 Golf GTI appeared taller than it was because of the front grille and dumpy, three-piece lower intake. But whether such changes are sufficient to distinguish the Mk6 GTI from the Mk5 remains to be seen.

VW is taking its all-new, sixth-generation Golf GTI to the Paris motor show. It’s not a huge step forward like the move from Mk4 to Mk5 was, but that’s testament to how much of an all-rounder the outgoing GTI is.

Under the skin, changes amount to an extra 10bhp – taking total output to 207bhp – and a drop in emissions, down by 11g/km, both of which owe their thanks to tweaks to the induction system. There’s a new electronic limited-slip diff, called XDS, something which appears on a GTI for the first time. Also making it’s hot hatch debut is the adaptive chassis control system (ACC) from the Scirocco, which comes complete with normal, comfort and sport settings.

Volkswagen has set mid to late January as the expected arrival date of their new Golf on the Irish market.

Now in its sixth generation, the Golf was first launched in 1974. Since then more than 26 million units have been sold worldwide.

Currently being presented to the international motoring media, the new Golf exhibits a high standard of quality and design. All key body elements have been restyled to present a sportier, more distinctive image. Precisely defined lines and edges and finely proportioned flared surfaces and recesses give the new Golf a more relaxed look.
