Audi pips Peugeot in Le Mans thriller

17/06/2008 17:34. THE duel of the diesels at this year’s Le Mans 24 hour race has been won by Audi with a car driven by Britain’s Allan McNish.

The German car maker’s R10 sports car took the chequered flag ahead of great rivals Peugeot.

The winning car was driven by McNish along with Tom Kristensen from Denmark and Italy’s Rinaldo Capello.

Britain also grabbed glory in the GT1 class with Aston Martin securing it second consecutive victory.

It was Kristensen’s record breaking eighth victory at Le Mans and also victory number eight for Audi which has dominated the classic endurance event since 2000.

No other driver has enjoyed such success at Le Mans as the Dane, first winning in a TWR Porsche in 1997.
