Renault has finally confirmed the departure of its aerodynamics chief Dino Toso.

We reported in April that the engineer, promoted to lead the Enstone based team's new CFD centre just last year, would be replaced by Dirk de Beer.

Toso joined Renault from Jordan in 2001, before he began a battle with cancer in 2004.

The team this week said Toso is "seeking new challenges in motor sport".

Toso, who has been a Renault employee for eight years, was at the helm of the aerodynamics' departments when Renault won back-to-back Drivers' and Constructors' Championships in 2005 and 2006.

Dirk de Beer replaced Toso as chief of aerodynamics in April.

One of the men credited with Renault's rise to the front of the Formula One world has departed Enstone, as the regie confirms the departure of aero ace Dino Toso after eight largely successful years together.

Having joined Renault from Jordan - where he was a race engineer on Damon Hill's car as the team took its first grand prix win - in 2000, the Italian rose to the post of director of aerodynamic technology and was instrumental in building one of the sport's most successful aerodynamics departments, which he led since 2003.

LONDON (AP) — Dino Toso is leaving Renault after five seasons as head of the Formula One team's aerodynamic technology.

Renault has won two F1 constructors' championships and never finished lower than third since Toso took charge of the department in 2003.

Renault won in 2005 and '06 but has slipped to seventh in the 10-team standings with only nine points leading into the eighth of the 18 grand prix races this season. Speculation is mounting that No. 1 driver Fernando Alonso is considering quitting the team.

Renault has confirmed that Dino Toso has now left the team, two months after he was replaced as its director of aerodynamic technology.

The Enstone-based squad carried out a technical reshuffle in April, handing over Toso's duties to Dirk de Beer.

Although an official reason for the change was not given at the time, the team said Toso would remain as an employee.

However it confirmed in an official statement on Tuesday that Toso, who joined Renault in 2000, had now left the team in search of a new challenge elsewhere.
