20/09/2008 01:16. IN recent years Subaru has become known for its world championship winning rally cars and their rip-snorting road equivalents - all of course powered by fuel-hungry turbocharged petrol engines.

And while it is thrilling fun to hurtle to 60mph in less than 0.0001 seconds and have a speedometer which goes up to 300 billion mph, the same excitement begins to wear thin when you have to pull into a fuel station every 200 miles or less to spend an ever-increasing amount of cash at the pumps.

At last Subaru has realised that what it really needs to attract a new type of customer is not a faster, twin-turbocharged monster but one that puts economy before outright performance - in other words a diesel engine.

And what a cracker it is.
