American Suzuki Motor Corp. announced Tuesday that it will forego this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit in favor of attending more local auto shows, including the Louisville New Car Show, scheduled for Feb. 20-22, 2009.

Suzuki will tout its 2009 lineup, which includes the four-door SX4 Sport, five-door SX4 crossover, XL7 mid-size SUV, Grand Vitara compact SUV and Equator full-size pick-up truck.

The Japanese automaker, beginning a new-product push, will instead devote its efforts to other shows and events.

"For this year we felt that we'd concentrate on some more regional shows and allocate our marketing dollars in a more personal, direct way at those shows," said Jeff Holland, spokesman for Suzuki.

Suzuki Motor Corp. will not take part in the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit because the space it was offered didn't fit its needs, the company and show organizers said Wednesday.

Suzuki is the second automaker to leave the Detroit show in two years. Porsche pulled out last year, but it cited a lack of significant customer base as the reason for its departure. Suzuki's acknowledgement that Cobo Center isn't big enough is the first confirmation by an automaker that the convention center doesn't fit carmakers' needs.
