Hyundai launched its new Genesis Coupe in the Korean market at an event on Jeju Island, Korea. The coupe follows on the heels of the the Genesis sports sedan, which was launched in South Korea and the U.S. earlier this year. While the sedan is focused on luxury, the new Genesis Coupe gives Hyundai some added sporting credentials thanks to its performance-focused front-engine rear-wheel-drive architecture.

The Genesis Coupe is designed to sit above Hyundai's Tiburon sports car, which has been sold in Australia for some time now but will end production later this year. Despite the coincidental timing, the Genesis Coupe is not a replacement for the Tiburon. Hyundai's Genesis sedan has been a critical success in the United States (though a V8-powered rear-wheel drive luxury sedan may not be a sales success in the current economic climate).  But there's another Genesis on the way, which has little in common with that car.  The automotive press is just beginning to get its hands on the upcoming Genesis Coupe, and so far, the impression is equally good...maybe better.

The Genesis Coupe is a sporty two-door " Mustang -fighter," to be offered in the U.S. for the 2010 model year.  It will be available with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine making 223 horsepower, or a 3.8-liter V6 making 310 HP.  Jalopnik notes that "Hyundai is promising that this will be the cheapest 300+ HP coupe in the world."

Hyundai launched its new Genesis Coupe in Korea today but the UK arm of the company says there's only a 50/50 chance of it coming to these shores.

The new car is a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe with two petrol engines available: a range-topping, all-aluminum 310bhp 3.8-litre V6 and a 223bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged unit. The V6 is capable of 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds while the 2.0-litre will complete the 0-60mph charge in 8.3 seconds. // Channel 4 News

As Hyundai moves up the ranks of the global sales charts, so too does it strive to rise to new heights of quality and value. The next step on that path was taken today with the launch of the Genesis Coupe in Seoul.

Information pertaining to the North American version of the car was also revealed. Pricing for the 3.8L 310hp Lambda V6 version is expected to start below $30,000, while the 210hp 2.0L turbo four cylinder is expected to be priced even lower. That pricing fits right in line with the Coupe's initial sales targets of 30,000 units per year in North America, reports Automotive News .
