"The enormous model selection available through our eight brands has again proven itself in the increasingly difficult market," said Detlef Wittig, VW's production chief, in a statement.

"In the month of May as well as in the January through May period, our deliveries clearly developed better than the weakening total demand in the European market," Wittig said.
