15/07/2008 12:36. A test mule for Volkswagens next-generation Touareg has been captured undergoing hot-weather and towing tests in Californias Death Valley. The current model is due for replacement in late 2010, and its hoped the new SUV will alleviate some of the problems with the current version including seating space, fuel efficiency and market positioning.

The Touareg has achieved only modest sales worldwide since its launch in 2003, mostly because of its lack of seven-seater capability and premium price tag compared with many of its Japanese rivals. These issues highlight the Touaregs awkward position in the market - more premium than many of its competitors, but not high-end enough to compete with the likes of Audi, BMW, Porsche and Mercedes.
