Volkswagen puts the wind up rivals

05/07/2008 02:14. IF VOLKSWAGEN'S marketing people had done their job they should have signed up Doctor Who to promote its latest offering.

After all it is probably only the Time Lord who can delve far enough back to remember the original version of its classic sports coupe, the Scirocco.

While they often say time flies, incredibly it is some 34 years since this iconic vehicle first broke cover at the Geneva Motor Show.

The Scirocco was an instant success for the German giant as it established a stranglehold on the sports scene alongside its legendary brother, the Golf GTi. In many respects it was the thinking man's sports car with its posh expensive looks, solid build quality and fine attention to detail.
