The No.1 NASCAR Sprint Cup car of Martin Truex Jr failed the opening day's inspection at Daytona International Speedway and the team could face penalties next week.

NASCAR has impounded the Dale Earnhardt team's car after it failed to fit the templates during scrutineering on Thursday. The roof of the car was the area under scrutiny and NASCAR will take the car to their Research and Development Centre in Concord, North Carolina.

"The cars met our templates when they left the shop, when they got down here apparently the greenhouse was too narrow for NASCAR's liking and didn't fit their templates," said DEI vice president John Story.

Truex's Chevrolet failed inspection before practice Thursday, prompting NASCAR officials to impound the car and sending Truex's crew scrambling to get the backup ready.

"Somebody made a big mistake," said Truex, who drives the No. 1 for Dale Earnhardt Inc. "Shouldn't happen in this level of auto racing, but people make mistakes. We'll go on."

Truex's car failed to fit NASCAR's roof template, and NASCAR decided to take a closer look at it. Officials planned to send the car to the sanctioning body's research and development center in Concord, N.C., and check out the roof design.

Thursday afternoon NASCAR officials confiscated the primary No. 1 Chevrolet from Dale Earnhardt Inc. after the car failed opening day inspection. The roof did not fit the inspection templates.

"The car fit our templates when they left the shop, then it got down here and apparently the greenhouse was too narrow for NASCAR's liking." explained John Story, DEI's Vice President of Motorsports Operations. "We worked on it as much as we could, but the more you work on it ... well, basically we weren't able to get it fixed."
